Tuesday of the Third Week of Advent

The Bible tells us of three visits — three annunciations — made by the angel Gabriel to prepare for the birth of the
Messiah.

The first was to Zechariah, during his priestly service in the Temple in Jerusalem. Zechariah learned he
would have a son, who would bring joy to him, to his wife Elizabeth, and to many others.

Gabriel then visited a young woman named Mary, to whom he brought the greatest and most mystifying news: she, a virgin, would bear the Son of God.

Lastly, Gabriel spoke to Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, in a dream.

To each, Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid.”
